As I put my coffee next to me, turn on my laptop, connect to the wifi, and type in "www.blogger.com", I wonder about topics to write on my blog. I think you would agree that I am usually filled with words. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, from the time that I woke up and brushed my teeth to making my coffee and getting settled to write, not much happens and I am left word-less. This makes me wonder about whether I should write sometime in the middle of the day when something interesting or not has already happened. Other times, I think, it is very dangerous territory because it is so easy to get caught up with life in the middle of the day that I just don't get to write!
If you have not already guessed, today is one of those days. I am particularly more tired than usual and I am nervous about a short presentation that I will be giving in my class. At the same time, I feel like it's cheating if I decide just not write all together and leave it for after class since I really do have time. I know I'll definitely have something to say tomorrow as I am going to start reading a new book, a short one, about the story of Ashura. Ashura is an event that took place in the month of Muharram (based on Islamic calendar). Of course, this is not as well-known as the month of Ramadan when everybody fasts and most educated people have an idea about that whether Moslem or not. No, Muharram is definitely not that well-known. Heck, I was born a Moslem and grew up in a very conservative family and I don't even know much about it. I know the basics...the month when Imam Hussein (the third Imam or caliphate of Shia sect) was killed in a war against the Yazid's people. Yazid, was another caliphate, of the Sunna sect. It is important to know that Moslems were not quite as separated as they are today into two different sects of Shia and Sunna as there was only being Moslem! Those were the simple times!
This year, I've decided, as a 28-year old woman, it's time I learned a bit more about my religion. So I am taking on this challenge to read about the events of Ashura here. It's a 10-chapter book, one chapter for each day of Muharram. Now, Muharram is the whole month but the happenings of Ashura were in the very first 10 days. Now Muharram began on Saturday, simultaneously with the month of October so I am already 4 days late. However, I am a pretty fast reader so I think I can catch up. I will just read 2 chapters per day for the first 3 days and I think I will be able to catch up this way! In any case, I will start reading today so that tomorrow, same time, I will be writing about what I read here. Until then, have a wonderful day.
